Information on belt exams

Belt exams up to and including 4th Kyu (blue belt) can be taken on fixed dates at the dojo. Examinations from 3rd Kyu (brown belt) are possible during JKS Switzerland federation training sessions. Examination dates can be found on the JKS annual schedule. Additionally, detailed information will be sent to all members via email before the examination.

The following three categories will be examined:

Kihon (Basic Training)
Kumite (Sparring)
Kata (Form)
Effort

The examinations are conducted according to the guidelines of JKS Switzerland; they are appropriate for each level, and the procedures are practiced during regular training. To pass the belt examination, most karateka require additional private practice. On this website, you can review the examination program on video to check your skills.

Registration

Those who, in the opinion of the Senseis (instructors), have a chance to pass the examinations will receive a registration form before the examination. This form, along with the karate pass (if available) and the examination fee, must be submitted on the day of the examination.

In principle, everyone is allowed to participate in the examination. We recommend listening to the instructors' assessment.

Chibi

For our youngest members, the Sensei (instructor) will conduct an examination adapted for children. This examination is free of charge. After passing the belt examination, the Chibi will receive the half-yellow belt and a diploma. There is no karate pass yet. The decision on which Chibi child may take the examination rests with the Sensei.

Important
Participants must accept the outcome of the examination, even in the event of a negative result. A missed examination can only be made up on the next official examination date due to organizational reasons. For questions about the belt examination, your Sensei will be happy to assist you at your next training session.
For Parents

Children often want to take an examination every time, but this is practically impossible. For higher ranks, the expected level usually cannot be met within 6 months. It is normal for children to need different amounts of time to meet the examination requirements. We therefore ask you not to put pressure on your child. Examinations are a part of karate, but not the most important one. As long as your child trains regularly and enjoys karate, they will automatically reach the required examination level.

We are aware that missing or failing a belt examination is a painful experience for a child. However, this is a learning process and part of karate.
Information on Examination Assessment

It is important to understand that, in addition to mastering the examination program, other aspects are included in the assessment. For higher-level examinations (blue/brown belt), not only the correct execution of the examination program is expected, but also greater precision and concentration. This can include, for example: how the hips are used, how powerfully techniques are executed, stability, whether they understand the meaning of individual techniques, rhythm, the precision of counter-techniques in partner exercises, and how quickly they are performed. These and many other aspects are incorporated into the experts' assessment.

The foundation of karate is basic training (Jap: Kihon). This part of the examination must be performed well to pass the examination. Examples of assessment criteria can be found below.
Passed

If the examinee successfully passes all three categories, they will receive the next belt, a diploma, and an entry in their karate pass. They can then prepare for the next examination.

Partially Passed

If the examinee fails one of the three categories but passes the other two, they have the option to take a re-examination after a training period of at least 2 months. Only the part that the participant failed will be tested. The re-examination is free of charge. If the re-examination is not passed, the entire exam must be retaken on an official examination date. The examination fee must be paid again.

Failed

If the examinee narrowly fails or fails multiple categories, the exam is considered not passed. The exam can only be retaken on an official examination date. The examination fee must be paid again.
